The Haryana government has announced a major change in school admission rules, ending all forms of age relaxation for Class 1 admissions. From the 2026–27 academic session, only children who have completed six years of age will be eligible to enroll in Class 1 across the state.
📌 Reason Behind the Decision
The move brings Haryana’s admission policy in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and follows directions issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court had emphasized the need for uniformity and clarity in age criteria to avoid confusion for parents and schools.
🧒 What the New Rule Means
- Children below six years of age will no longer be granted admission to Class 1.
- Earlier age relaxations that allowed younger children to enroll have been completely withdrawn.
- Students who do not meet the age requirement will be placed in pre-primary or Balvatika levels and will transition to Class 1 once they turn six.
🏫 Impact on Parents and Schools
The new rule will apply to all government and private schools in Haryana. In cities like Gurugram, where demand for Class 1 seats is high, parents will need to plan admissions more carefully. Schools are also preparing for increased demand in pre-primary classes.
📚 Alignment with NEP 2020
Under NEP 2020’s 5+3+3+4 education structure, the first three years focus on early childhood education, followed by formal schooling beginning at age six. Officials say the updated rule supports children’s cognitive and emotional development by ensuring age-appropriate learning.
🔍 Looking Ahead
Education authorities believe the decision will create a more balanced and standardized education system, reducing academic pressure on younger children and ensuring a smoother transition into formal schooling.
