Meaning of Eid-al-Adha and Story Behind it

In the Arabic Eid refers to a holiday and Adha is a reference to sacrifice. Hence Eid-al-Adha means a holiday of sacrifice or we can call it as a festival of sacrifice. The story behind it based on the Binding of Issac which is stated in the old testament of the Bible. One day God commands Abraham to give his son as a sacrifice. The sacrifice was to be done on the mountains of Moriah which is located in Jerusalem.

There is a conflict in this that says according to Muslims it was commanded on the small hills of Marwa and Safa which is in the vicinity of Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Coming back to the story, Abraham is a strong disciple of the Allah got agreed to sacrifice his son. HE took around three days to the mountain which was told as the location. HE then asked his servant to stay there and he along with Issac moved on into the hills.

Being unknown of the sacrifice, Issac questioned him saying that where is the animal for sacrifice. He was answered that god will himself provide the animal. Just when he was ready to sacrifice his son an angel appeared. Abraham turned back and saw that he has sacrificed the goat instead of Issac. Allah was very pleased by the obedience of Abraham and gifted him money prosperity and descendants.
